THE NEIGHBORHOOD I NEWS
Summer is here! It is such a wonderful time to gather with friends, enjoy nature, and celebrate being alive! Regardless of world issues, inflation and uncertainty of our futures, what I can say, summer is such a fantastic time of year!
With kids out of school and travel plans possibly put on hold due to the rising costs of gas, I predict a more grounded and home centered summer celebration for many families across the country. Sometimes, these situations and circumstances remind us of what is truly important: quality time, being present, enjoying family and friends, living happily. Truly, these are joyful moments when we allow them to come forth and embrace these tender times with those we are connected with.
Right when summer begins, we celebrate our Dads around the world. We love dads as much as we love moms! We thank all of you who have fathered your children, family and friends' children, and even to our children where we work! We love and appreciate you!
We have some awesome ideas to help bring clean water, food, emergency supplies, school supplies and other necessities to Africa, South America and Ukraine! Here’s a few ideas:
*Create a fundraiser with your kids! Teach them early how to make a difference and to care for others! The sky's the limit!
-Watermelon eating contests with neighbors
-Neighborhood car wash-Good, old-fashioned lemonade stand
-Rootbeer float stand
-Dance party with neighbors
-Movie and pizza night
-Bike ride through the neighborhood-5k walk for kids
We will be glad to help support your efforts and teach the children about others that live around the world that need our help! Take a look at this quick video message!
We are so excited to share pictures of our second harvest in Somerset, our Signature Village. The women of the village that care for the children began clearing the land, by hand, knowing we would find water. Without water, there is no life for much of the year in these parts of the world. Irrigation is not available without clean water. Growing food in the dry season becomes impossible. Without water, nothing grows. Historically, their season for growing food has been short. Until….
Moms House for Children partnered with Somerset to improve the lives of 500 children that are orphaned and vulnerable. We have been working with the community to create leadership through governing bodies, committees and subcommittees. These groups are trained on authenticity, transparency, accounting and administration as we prepare to build our Dream Center.
Before we even dug for water, the women started cultivating the land. Without faith and hard work, this farm would not have been ready! When we dug our first well, we consider this liquid gold, as we know the lives of these children have been changed. Clean water begins everything! No more waterborne illnesses, no more missing school to collect water, no more going thirsty.
Somerset never had clean water. They have all but begged every nonprofit in the area to bring clean water, for more than a decade. Moms House For Children and our donor family have answered those calls and those prayers! And now, after a year, we have our second harvest that is once again, a bumper crop! Our team is overjoyed knowing the impact we are creating in this region!
Peru has been especially hard during the pandemic and now inflation has affected the jungle. My conversations with our Regional Director of Peru, Nancy, is always tough. Food costs are through the roof, gasoline prices are hugely impacting work and getting to markets which are unreachable except by boat. People cannot afford to buy anything at the markets. They are living off the land as best they can.
When I tell this story to others, some react with “oh.. Well, at least they have bananas. Can they fish and hunt for their food?” Of course there are wild bananas, fish in the river and animals they can hunt in the jungle. My response is always the same. “Have you ever watched Survivor or Naked and Afraid?” It is so difficult to feed a family by hunting in the wild and searching for wild fruits. It is so difficult. They do the best they can and right now, all focus is on feeding the children.
We are so happy to highlight our Peer-to-Peer fundraiser, Brianna Holbrook, who has visited this region is spearheading a fundraiser to feed these children. We are blessed to have someone who cares to say YES!!! The children will be the happiest when they see the food arriving.
Times are hard globally right now. Inflation is at a 40-year high and this just doesn’t affect us here in the states. If we feel it here, then you can rest assured that it is felt everywhere. Whatever we are going through right now, does not compare to what the Ukrainians are feeling. The invasion of Russia into Ukraine is ongoing. Although the news has moved onto other areas to report, the war is just as prevalent as it was in February this year. We also know that many regions in Ukraine have been completely leveled and will take decades to recover.
Moms House For Children will stay in Ukraine for orphaned and vulnerable children. Many more children are becoming orphaned as we speak. We are working to deliver goods and services to the children who are still in harms way, living in bomb shelters and the like. We are raising funds in two ways: Protection for the staff that procure and deliver goods to the children and essential supplies for the orphaned and vulnerable children living through this war.
We need your help right now.
Brianna is a delight for us at Moms House! She has been to this region of the jungle in the Peruvian Amazon and has fed the children in our village. The plight of these kids is really a hardship most of us rarely see in our lives. She recently visited Nueve de Octubre, fed the children and brought some coloring books and crayons. Since then, she has decided to raise more funds for the lunch program as it is getting increasingly more difficult for families to feed their children. Inflation has hit the Amazon and the struggle is real.
We are so grateful for Brianna and know she will help these children by partnering with Moms House and providing their most basic needs! Brianna is a healer and brings plant medicines to the world to help others. You can learn more about Brianna and her business here: https://healingbeekambo.awakehealer.net/
